The Lie about God and Ourselves

Death started in Eden. The ability to attribute worth or Good and Evil was never intended for us to do. The scripture tells us that God is good. It also says that our value to God is very good. Throughout scripture, God tells us of the wickedness in our hearts and how he cannot have fellowship with it.

One of my favorite pictures to look at on the internet is old cars. I would love to have one of the old classics. Some are restored, some are in process, but others are in pretty messy condition.

We picture ourselves

The picture above is of a car manufactured in 1970. It’s a Ford Torino GT – Original 429 4-speed transmission. It is complete. It is also listed on eBay for $6,000.

Restored, a similar car is listed on eBay for $17,000.

Either price tag is more than the car would have sold for new in 1970. So, why would this piece of “junk” put in a grassy lot be worth $6,000? Because someone looked at it and saw the worth. They knew the market value.

God created you and me and everyone else and put a price tag on them – priceless. So priceless, God gave his only son to redeem each of us. Not all of us. He paid that price for you and me. The value he ascribes to you and me is set.

God’s value is set – priceless. The Word tells us he doesn’t lie. He is totally righteous, loving, just, good. He loves us more than we will ever imagine. This is reality.

The lie Adam and Eve believed was that God was holding back. They believed he was telling a lie. They doubted him. This was not only the beginning of sin, it was the beginning of death. It was at this point the relationship was destroyed. Death did surely come that day. It was a direct act of doubt. They were cut from the Vine that day. This may have been the first lie, but many more were soon to follow. They believed the lie which grew. It grew just like a tree. Overshadowing everything – their garden, their relationships, their hearts.

Fruit Salad

They now had to defend themselves. They cast doubts on each other and eventually it led to murder and a lost relationship. A friend of mine calls this fruit salad. The fruit salad is lies we eat and vomit on ourselves and those around us. It is believing that we can lie to God. We can fool each other and everything we see. We are not able to do this. When we do, the end result is the very same, “you will surely die.”
